On this evening, Jews around the world commemorate the liberation of their ancestors from slavery in Egypt, which took place several thousand years ago. They do so through a series of ritual acts, texts, songs, and a meal. That Seder evening inspired me to organize this Keti Koti Table. Other sources of inspiration included: the Ramadan festival, with which Dutch Muslims conclude their period of fasting; the Kwanzaa celebration, through which African Americans celebrate their \u201cfamily, community, and culture\u201d; and the dialogue tables held in 2004 following the murder of Theo van Gogh.<\/p>\n<p>The Keto Koti Table is a ritual for commemorating the history of slavery in the Netherlands, its consequences for all\u2014both Black and white\u2014descendants of those involved in this history, and for celebrating freedom. It is also my personal history. Both of my parents are Dutch nationals of Surinamese descent, and my mother\u2019s grandmother was born into slavery. In the Netherlands, slavery was officially abolished on July 1, 1863, by King William III. This was late compared to other countries. Moreover, those who had been enslaved did not immediately gain their freedom. The Dutch government forced them to continue working for another ten years, until 1873, under \u201cstate supervision\u201d for their former owners. For this reason, some consider 1873 to be the true end of slavery. Since then, July 1 has been a national holiday in Suriname.<\/p>\n<p>Although the stories about that period were usually so painful that they were not passed down, I was very aware of what had happened. I also realized more and more that this history continues to leave its mark on the lives of the surviving relatives\u2014both Black and white\u2014on the communities, and on our society as a whole. Gradually, I felt a growing need to reflect on this past around July 1. But not alone\u2014I wanted to engage in a conversation with others in which we ask ourselves what significance this past and the freedom we\u2019ve gained hold for each of us. That\u2019s how I came to the Keti Koti Table.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after, I discovered that sharing a meal surrounded by rituals is a very old and important tradition in Afro-Surinamese culture: the <em>Kra Tafra<\/em>. This table is designed to display the \u201c<em>kra<\/em>\u201d, to appease the soul and make it stronger. The Keti Koti Table therefore also fits within the Afro-Surinamese tradition. During the Keti Koti Table, freedom is celebrated, but the struggle against slavery is also commemorated. After all, those enslaved by the Netherlands in Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles actively resisted from the very beginning. Some fled into the jungle, where they established their own communities in order to live in freedom. From this base, they also carried out guerrilla attacks to undermine the system of slavery. To this day, descendants of these freed enslaved people\u2014the Maroons\u2014live in villages in the Surinamese interior.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to commemorating this struggle and celebrating freedom, the Keti Koti Table also focuses on questions of identity and meaning. Because those who were enslaved had been stripped of their identity and humanity, their regained freedom meant they had to develop a new relationship with their identity, their past, and their future. Keti Koti means: the chains have been broken; slavery is over.
