Unwanted childlessness, an invisible loss

Relatives, friends and colleagues of childless people are expressly invited to this evening.

One in six couples experience fertility problems. Ten percent of them remain childless. Many single people live with an unfulfilled desire to have children. From this you can conclude thateverybody directly or indirectly with unwanted childlessness.

Childlessness involves a complex grieving process; what one loses is invisible but has a huge impact on life. No one becomes childless on a desert island; in the midst of fertile and reproducing contemporaries, feelings of loneliness, no longer belonging, missing the boat play a major role. From the environmental side, ignorance and clumsiness often play a role in dealing with their childless loved ones.

In her approach she emphasizes the systemic aspect of this loss. Just as the arrival of (grand)children sets the entire system in motion, the arrival of fertility problems and childlessness also creates a pervasive dynamic. Because this is often not recognized or recognized, this aspect of life does not become integrated, which results in a lot of extra and unnecessary suffering.

More information leads to more knowledge and awareness; it gives us all the opportunity to take up this empty space in life in our family and friends. And this is much needed!

After a thorough introduction to this subject, an exchange and a joint research into how this theme can be better integrated into society follows.

Odile van Eck (1957) is herself undesirably childless. Due to the pain of her childlessness, she has embarked on a spiritual quest. Since 1994 she has been guiding people in integrating their childlessness. She regularly gives lectures and involves the social environment where possible. She wrote three books; her last book 'An invisible loss' was published in 2010.
